At least 20 dead in Lampedusa shipwreck, dozens rescued but many still missing
At least 20 people lost their lives on Wednesday after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the southern Italian island of Lampedusa, according to the United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) and local media reports.
Italian rescuers have so far recovered 20 bodies from the waters, while operations to locate other victims are ongoing. Initial estimates suggest between 70 and 80 people managed to survive the disaster, although the exact number of missing remains uncertain.
Filippo Ungaro, a spokesperson for UNHCR in Italy, expressed “deep anguish” over the tragedy, warning that more people could still be unaccounted for. “Twenty bodies have been recovered and the same number are missing,” he wrote on social media platform X.
The Italian interior ministry has not yet issued an official statement on the incident. The tragedy underscores once again the deadly risks faced by migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean in search of safety and better living conditions.
