At least 12 killed and 9 injured in Johannesburg shooting, South Africa police launch manhunt
At least 12 people have been killed and nine others injured in a shooting in a township near Johannesburg, South African police confirmed, prompting a large-scale manhunt for more than 10 suspects.
The attack occurred late Tuesday night in an informal settlement in the Cleveland area, located about six kilometers east of Johannesburg’s city center. According to police, a group of armed men arrived by vehicle and opened fire on residents before fleeing the scene.
Authorities said the attackers split into groups and moved through different parts of the settlement, shooting at people in multiple locations. The victims include both men and women, with several pronounced dead at the scene and others dying later in hospital.
Police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi stated that investigations are ongoing, but the motive behind the attack remains unclear. No arrests have been made so far.
South Africa continues to face high levels of violent crime, often linked to gang activity and illegal economic networks. The country records dozens of homicides daily, with firearms—both legal and illegal—frequently used in violent incidents.
The police have launched an intensive search operation to track down the suspects responsible for the mass shooting.
