Around 50,000 Syrians leave Lebanon in one week amid rising regional tensions
Around 50,000 Syrian nationals have returned from Lebanon to Syria over the past week, according to international organizations monitoring population movements in the region. The departures come as security tensions escalate in the Middle East, raising fears among displaced communities living near the Lebanese-Syrian border.
Humanitarian agencies report that the recent movements reflect growing uncertainty among Syrian refugees who have been residing in Lebanon for years. Many families are choosing to leave after security warnings and evacuation calls issued in areas affected by the ongoing hostilities linked to the broader regional confrontation.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has observed what it describes as significant cross-border activity. According to the organization’s mission chief in Lebanon, Mathieu Luciano, tens of thousands of Syrians crossed the border during the past week alone.
The figures are based on official data collected at border crossings and do not include people who may have returned through informal routes. The actual number of departures could therefore be higher.
Lebanon hosts one of the largest populations of Syrian refugees in the world relative to its size. The country has struggled for years with economic and political crises, which have already placed heavy pressure on public services and local communities. The recent escalation in regional tensions has further increased uncertainty for displaced families.
Aid organizations warn that the sudden return of thousands of people could create additional humanitarian challenges inside Syria, where infrastructure and basic services remain fragile in many areas.
International agencies continue to monitor the situation closely and have called for safe and voluntary returns while ensuring that civilians receive adequate humanitarian support on both sides of the border.
