Armed group neutralized in Guinea hours before presidential election

Guinean security forces announced on Saturday that they had neutralized an armed group accused of planning subversive actions threatening national security, just hours before the country’s presidential election.

According to an official statement from the internal security operational command, the operation took place early in the morning in a suburb of Conakry, following intelligence reports indicating the presence of an armed cell. Security units carried out a targeted intervention, which reportedly led to exchanges of gunfire and the arrest of the individuals involved. Authorities did not provide further details on casualties or the exact nature of the group.

Residents of the affected neighborhood reported hearing gunshots during the night and observing visible damage to nearby buildings, including bullet impacts and signs of violence in the area. An investigation has been launched to identify possible links and determine responsibilities connected to the incident.

The security operation comes on the eve of a highly sensitive presidential election meant to conclude Guinea’s political transition after the military takeover of 2021. The head of the ruling junta, who is among the candidates, is seeking election despite earlier commitments not to run for office.

The vote has drawn criticism from opposition groups and civil society, as several prominent political figures were barred from participating. Restrictions on public demonstrations and political activities have been in place for years, contributing to a tense political climate.

Guinea, a resource-rich West African country, has experienced decades of political instability marked by authoritarian governance. Despite its mineral wealth, a significant portion of the population continues to live below the poverty line, highlighting the broader social and economic challenges facing the nation.
