Arab-Islamic Summit in Saudi Arabia to Address Israeli Conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon
An upcoming summit in Saudi Arabia will focus on the ongoing conflicts between Israel and Gaza as well as Lebanon, according to Saudi state media reports. This meeting, which was announced by the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs in late October, is part of efforts to push for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian issue. Saudi Press Agency has stated that Israel's actions in Gaza and Lebanon have prompted Arab and Islamic leaders to take immediate action.
The summit will prioritize halting the violence, safeguarding civilians, supporting Palestinians and Lebanese citizens, uniting regional stances, and pressuring the international community to take decisive steps to end the violence and work toward long-term peace and stability.
Key leaders, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, are expected to attend, while Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will be absent due to urgent matters, though Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref will represent the country.
This summit follows a similar one held last year, which condemned Israel’s actions in Gaza, although it failed to reach a consensus on concrete measures like severing diplomatic or economic ties with Israel. The presence of Israel-recognizing and opposing countries within the Arab League and OIC highlighted the division over regional policies regarding Israel.
The summit comes at a pivotal time, with the election of Donald Trump for a second term in the United States. Regional leaders may use this summit to send a message to the incoming U.S. administration, emphasizing the need for dialogue, de-escalation, and criticism of Israel’s military actions. Analysts suggest that Saudi Arabia will seek to strengthen its position as a key partner in U.S. Middle Eastern strategies.
The conflict’s devastation has been severe, with Israel’s offensive in Gaza resulting in over 43,600 Palestinian deaths, the majority of whom were civilians, and more than 3,100 lives lost in Lebanon due to attacks on Hezbollah.
