Apple to pay $1 billion annually to use Google’s Gemini AI model in Siri
Apple has reportedly struck a landmark deal with Google to integrate a custom version of the Gemini AI model into its voice assistant Siri, according to Bloomberg. The partnership, worth around $1 billion per year, reflects Apple’s determination to accelerate its shift toward artificial intelligence and close the gap with leading competitors.
The integration of Gemini, boasting 1.2 trillion parameters — far more than Apple’s 150 billion-parameter in-house cloud model — aims to make Siri smarter and more context-aware, capable of summarizing content, scheduling actions, and understanding complex user intent.
Apple plans to run Gemini on its private cloud servers to maintain strict data privacy standards while continuing to develop its own AI models, reflecting a dual strategy of technological reliance and long-term independence.
After considering collaborations with OpenAI and Anthropic, Apple ultimately chose Google, its longtime rival, for this strategic partnership. The next-generation Siri, powered by Gemini, is expected to debut in spring 2026.
