Amoxicillin, Paracetamol, Corticosteroids... no shortages expected for winter medicines
Since 2023, several drugs — including antibiotics, fever reducers, corticosteroids, and asthma treatments — have been closely monitored by the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety (ANSM) as part of its winter plan.
This winter, marked by flu syndromes, sore throats, and asthma flare-ups, is expected to unfold under better conditions than previous years, thanks to a “favorable context” in the availability of essential medicines, announced the ANSM on Thursday.
“After several winter seasons marked by shortages,” the agency has relaunched its monitoring plan to track stocks and supply chains in order to anticipate any potential difficulties. For the past three years, the ANSM has implemented this annual plan to prevent shortages during a period of intense circulation of bacterial (requiring antibiotics) and viral diseases, such as seasonal flu.
14 Drugs Under Surveillance
Since 2023, 13 active ingredients have been monitored. This year, a 14th molecule — amoxicillin/clavulanic acid 1000 mg/125 mg — has been added to the list of antibiotics being tracked, following reports of shortages from healthcare professionals last winter and the “usual seasonal rise in prescriptions,” according to an ANSM statement.
The plan also includes monitoring of critical medical devices, such as pediatric and adult resuscitation equipment and rapid diagnostic tests (TROD).
In the early 2020s, France faced significant shortages of common antibiotics such as amoxicillin, particularly in pediatric formulations.
