Amex moves to acquire hyper in bid to expand Ai-powered expense tools
Financial services giant American Express has announced plans to acquire Hyper, a startup specializing in artificial intelligence-driven expense management solutions. The move highlights the growing importance of AI in reshaping corporate financial operations.
Hyper, founded in 2022 and backed by Sam Altman, develops intelligent software capable of automating routine financial tasks. Its tools can categorize expenses, generate reports, verify compliance with company policies, and send reminders for submissions, significantly reducing manual workload.
The acquisition reflects a broader shift within the financial industry, where companies are increasingly investing in automation technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce operational costs. By integrating Hyper’s capabilities, American Express aims to strengthen its services for corporate clients and improve the management of business spending.
Chief Executive Officer Stephen Squeri has previously emphasized that artificial intelligence is transforming how businesses operate, describing it as a structural change in the industry. This deal aligns with that vision, positioning AmEx to compete more effectively in the evolving fintech landscape.
Although financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed, the acquisition is expected to be finalized in the second quarter of 2026. The companies have already collaborated in the past, including a partnership to launch a credit card, suggesting a strategic alignment that predates the deal.
As competition intensifies in the fintech sector, the integration of AI into core financial services is becoming a key differentiator, with firms seeking to deliver faster, smarter, and more efficient solutions to their clients.
