Alvarez & Marsal expands into Africa As investment interest increases
Global consultancy firm Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) has officially opened its first office in Africa, located in Cape Town, South Africa, marking a strategic move to strengthen its presence on a continent increasingly attracting international investment.
The expansion comes at a time when global competition for critical minerals—used in defence systems, electronics, and renewable energy technologies—is intensifying. African countries, rich in natural resources, have become key players in this global race.
Tensions between major global powers, particularly China and Western countries, have further increased interest in Africa’s mineral wealth. At the same time, ongoing geopolitical instability, including conflicts in the Middle East, has exposed weaknesses in global energy infrastructure and highlighted the need for more resilient supply chains.
According to A&M, its new African team will focus on supporting clients in infrastructure, energy, mining, and industrial sectors. The firm aims to help businesses structure projects in a way that attracts international funding and ensures successful implementation.
“We are seeing the flow of potential funds coming to Africa and what we do basically is to help companies to have their plans and attract these funds. Once they have the projects, we help them to deliver,” said Marcos Ganut, A&M’s global head of infrastructure and capital projects.
The Cape Town office, launched this week, currently employs around 20 staff members. The company plans to expand the team to more than 100 employees within the next three years, according to Johan van der Westhuyzen, who leads A&M’s Africa operations after spending 15 years in the Middle East.
