Advanced Patrol Vessel Construction Accelerated for Moroccan Navy

Navantia, a prominent Spanish shipbuilder, is fast-tracking the production of a state-of-the-art Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) for the Royal Moroccan Navy. This initiative, part of a €150 million contract, reflects strengthening military collaboration between Spain and Morocco.

The 90-meter vessel, with a displacement of 2,200 tons, integrates advanced features to maximize operational performance. It boasts a hybrid propulsion system to enhance fuel efficiency and a top speed of 22 knots. The vessel is designed for versatility, featuring:

- A landing platform for NH90 helicopters.

- An integrated radar system with a 200-kilometer detection range.

- Modular systems tailored for missions such as combating illegal fishing, maritime trafficking, and search-and-rescue operations.

- A 20-day endurance at sea, enabling extended surveillance and patrol missions.

A key element of the contract is a technology transfer clause, facilitating Moroccan engineers' involvement in the construction process. This collaboration aligns with Morocco's strategy to modernize its naval forces and strengthen its maritime presence in the Mediterranean and Atlantic.

This initiative is part of Morocco’s broader defense modernization program, aiming to equip the Royal Moroccan Navy with at least four advanced vessels by 2030. The OPV project underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing its military capabilities and fostering regional security.
