Achraf Hakimi crowned African player of the year at the CAF Awards 2025

Morocco celebrated a landmark moment on Wednesday evening in Rabat as Achraf Hakimi was named African Player of the Year 2025 during a spectacular edition of the CAF Awards held at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P). In front of leading figures from African and global football, the Moroccan international carved his place in history, becoming the fifth Moroccan to receive this prestigious distinction—twenty years after Mustapha Hadji’s triumph.

The atmosphere inside the packed venue was electric, filled with emotion and national pride. Hakimi stepped onto the stage to a thunderous ovation. Competing against finalists Mohamed Salah and Victor Osimhen, the Paris Saint-Germain defender secured the award thanks to an outstanding season marked by decisive performances for both club and country. His consistency, tactical impact, and leadership were key factors that convinced the voters and reaffirmed his status as one of the world’s finest in his position.

A Historic Moment for Moroccan Football

Hakimi now follows in the footsteps of Moroccan legends such as Ahmed Faras, Mohamed Timoumi, Zaki Badou, and Mustapha Hadji. This symbolic continuity highlights Morocco’s growing influence in African football, especially as the nation prepares to host the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The ceremony also showcased Morocco’s strong presence across multiple award categories, with players, coaches, and national teams receiving widespread recognition. This reflects a sporting momentum driven by long-term investment and a clear development strategy.

A Ceremony Defined by Excellence

Hosted in Rabat, the event featured a striking visual production combining modern lighting, digital artistry, and tributes to iconic moments in African football. UM6P was transformed into a world-class stage, welcoming guests from across the continent and beyond.

During his acceptance speech, Hakimi dedicated his award “to Morocco, to my family, and to all young Africans who dream of becoming footballers.” He emphasized that the trophy symbolizes “hard work, determination, and passion for the game.”

A Triumph That Opens New Horizons

At 27, Achraf Hakimi adds another major milestone to an already remarkable career. This recognition further strengthens his role as a leader within the Moroccan national team, particularly with a highly anticipated AFCON approaching.

For African football, his victory highlights the rise of versatile, dynamic, and tactically vital players—qualities the Moroccan star embodies with excellence.
