A Holocaust memorial vandalized in Aisne, authorities denounce “heinous acts”
Authorities in northern France have condemned the deliberate destruction of a Holocaust memorial in the commune of Montigny-Lengrain, in the Aisne department. The incident, discovered on Sunday, October 19, was described by the local prefecture as “heinous acts that insult the memory of the deportees and defile our republican values.”
A photograph released by the prefecture shows the white stone monument completely knocked down, almost to its base. The commemorative plaque, which was attached to the structure, has disappeared, according to the Aisne gendarmerie.
The Soissons prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation into what has been classified as “voluntary destruction.” The small memorial had been inaugurated in the summer of 2024 to honor the victims of convoy 7909—a Nazi “death train” that departed from Compiègne in July 1944 and passed through Aisne on its way to the Dachau concentration camp in southern Germany.
Prefect Fanny Anor strongly condemned the act, reaffirming the region’s commitment to remembrance and the fight against antisemitism.
