2025 set to become one of the hottest years ever recorded, EU climate data indicates

European climate scientists report that 2025 is almost guaranteed to rank as the second- or third-warmest year ever measured, continuing a worrying pattern of escalating global temperatures.

According to the Copernicus Climate Change Service, global average temperatures from January to November were nearly 1.5°C above preindustrial levels, mirroring the anomalies observed in 2023 — already one of the hottest years on record.
Dr. Samantha Burgess, deputy director of Copernicus, noted that the three-year average from 2023 to 2025 is likely to surpass 1.5°C for the first time, a symbolic threshold that world leaders pledged to avoid under the Paris Agreement.

November stood out as the third-warmest ever recorded, with unusual heat concentrated in regions such as northern Canada and the Arctic Ocean. The month also brought a series of destructive weather events, including intense storms and severe flooding across parts of south and southeast Asia.

Scientists warn that the increasing buildup of greenhouse gases has intensified heatwaves, heavy rainfall, and other climate extremes. While El Niño contributed to temperature spikes in 2023 and 2024, weak La Niña conditions in 2025 have done little to counteract long-term warming.

Copernicus analysts emphasize that these milestones highlight the rapid acceleration of global warming, stressing that significantly cutting greenhouse gas emissions remains the only effective path to stabilizing the climate.

The findings align with assessments from the World Meteorological Organization, which recently confirmed that the period from 2015 to 2025 includes the 11 warmest years since global records began in 1850.
