Strengthening Partnerships: Visiting Moroccan Citrus Growers

Morocco plays a pivotal role as a major citrus supplier for the northern hemisphere from December to June. For U.S. importers like Salix Fruits, fostering robust relationships with Moroccan growers is essential. Vince Biasibetti, Executive Sales for Salix Fruits USA, recently undertook a visit to Moroccan citrus producers to assess the current year's crop amidst the challenges posed by drought.

"The purpose of the visit was to evaluate mandarin and orange availability and quality, given the impact of drought on sizes," explained Biasibetti. "Establishing stronger relationships with producers ensures a consistent volume and premium quality, benefiting both parties."

During his visit to farms in Marrakech and Beni Mellal, Biasibetti noted varying effects of the drought. Fortunately, he observed that both cosmetic and internal fruit quality seemed to be minimally impacted.

As Moroccan citrus is shipped into New York and Philadelphia terminals, Biasibetti's focus was on "securing the necessary volume for U.S. client programs and exploring trading opportunities." Additionally, identifying lesser-known varieties for testing expanded Salix's reach in the American market.

Compliance with the FDA's Foreign Supplier Verification Program emerged as another key priority for Salix. "Tracking this with our suppliers enables us to meet FDA standards and ensures consumer protection through proper controls and labeling," explained Biasibetti.

Recognizing the importance of optimal preparation and relationship-building before each season, Biasibetti concluded that Salix's U.S. operations team will be visiting Argentine lemon growers next in preparation for the 2024 pre-season.
