Morocco partners with French AI firm Mistral AI to drive innovation and ethical tech adoption

Morocco has strengthened its standing in the artificial intelligence sector through a strategic partnership with Mistral AI, a leading French company specializing in generative AI. This collaboration aims to boost local expertise, foster innovation, and promote ethical AI practices.

On Friday, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Morocco’s Minister Delegate in charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Arthur Mensch, cofounder and CEO of Mistral AI, at a ceremony held at the ministry’s headquarters in Rabat. The event was attended by prominent officials, including Minister of Industry and Commerce Ryad Mezzour, Omar Seghrouchni (President of the National Commission for the Protection of Personal Data), Nezha Hayat (Director General of the Mohammed VI Investment Fund), and Khalid Safir (Director General of the Caisse de Dépôt et de Gestion).

The agreement focuses on enhancing Morocco's AI capabilities through training programs, applied research, and knowledge-sharing initiatives. It also encourages the growth of startups and industrial projects leveraging AI to address local business challenges. This partnership aligns with the government’s broader objective of creating a sustainable, inclusive AI ecosystem.

A statement from the ministry highlights the emphasis on ethical and responsible AI development, prioritizing data protection and fostering public trust. The collaboration also aims to position Morocco as a regional hub for digital innovation and a leader in artificial intelligence across the African continent.

Founded in 2023, Mistral AI has rapidly gained prominence in the global AI race. The company’s mission, led by cofounders Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix, is to develop advanced yet accessible generative AI models.

The partnership aligns with Morocco’s national strategy to integrate AI into education, research, and industry under the Morocco Digital 2030 program. This initiative includes introducing AI concepts in schools, equipping educational institutions with digital tools, and offering training for teachers and students. Researchers in Morocco are increasingly applying AI in healthcare, governance, and linguistic diversity, making this collaboration a critical step toward accelerating adoption.

By partnering with Mistral AI, Morocco seeks to ensure that its technological advancements adhere to principles of ethics and sovereignty while driving innovation and inclusion.
