Morocco and Belgium Strengthen Counterterrorism Cooperation

Morocco and Belgium Strengthen Counterterrorism Cooperation

Morocco has long been recognized as a key player in global peace and security efforts, and its commitment to combating terrorism remains at the forefront of international cooperation. On this front, Abdellatif Hammouchi, head of Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security and Territorial Surveillance (DGSN-DGST), met with Francisca Bostyn, Director General of Belgium’s State Security, to discuss enhancing counterterrorism efforts between the two nations.

The meeting, held in Rabat, saw Bostyn leading a high-level Belgian security delegation aimed at addressing shared concerns regarding security and terrorism. Bostyn acknowledged Morocco’s significant contributions to the global fight against extremism, emphasizing Belgium’s commitment to bolstering cooperation to neutralize threats to both countries’ security.

A primary focus of the discussion was expanding bilateral cooperation between Morocco and Belgium's security agencies, particularly in the exchange of intelligence and security expertise. This dialogue is part of a broader strategy, with Hammouchi actively engaging with international counterparts to strengthen collaboration on internal security and emerging threats.

Morocco’s contributions to regional and international security were highlighted during Hammouchi’s participation in key security symposia. Notably, in September, he took part in the 8th Interpol meeting for the MENA region’s security and police heads. This platform provided an opportunity to share Morocco’s expertise in combating rising crimes such as organized crime, online radicalization, illicit financial flows, and drone-based terrorist attacks.

Morocco’s counterterrorism efforts have garnered recognition from global entities, including NATO and Interpol. In May, Interpol acknowledged Morocco’s involvement in 20 significant security operations worldwide, underscoring the country’s influence in maintaining international stability. This recognition was further solidified by Morocco’s election as Vice President of Interpol for Africa—a testament to the global trust placed in the country to safeguard security.

The country’s role in promoting security cooperation was also underscored by NATO’s Secretary General’s Special Representative for the Southern Neighborhood, Javier Colomina, who described Morocco as an "indispensable player" in regional and international security collaboration.

As Morocco continues to strengthen its partnerships and contribute to global security, its leadership in counterterrorism remains vital for tackling the increasingly complex challenges posed by extremism and transnational threats.
