US credibility at stake over possible sanctions against Russia says Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron declared that the potential decision by the United States to impose sanctions on Russia, should it continue to reject a ceasefire in Ukraine, represents a major “test of credibility” for Washington. Speaking during a press conference in Singapore on May 30 as he concluded his tour of Southeast Asia, Macron emphasized the importance of the US demonstrating its commitment to act if Moscow shows no willingness to pursue peace.

Macron revealed that he had spoken with President Donald Trump 48 hours earlier, who expressed growing impatience over the situation. “Now the question is: what do we do next? We Europeans are ready,” Macron stated alongside Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

Later in the evening, Macron was expected to deliver the opening address at the Shangri-La Dialogue, the premier Asian security and defense summit, previously attended by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Earlier this month, on May 10, Macron and fellow leaders of the “coalition of volunteers” visited Kyiv. During the visit, they issued a stern warning of massive sanctions against Russia if it failed to agree to an immediate ceasefire. However, these threats have yet to be enforced.
