Positive talks between Iran and US in Oman, agreement to resume next week

On April 12, discussions between Iran and the United States in Oman were described as "positive" and "constructive." The talks were aimed at addressing the growing nuclear program of Tehran. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi highlighted that both sides are nearing an agreement that could form the foundation for future negotiations. He emphasized that the goal was not to continue talks for their own sake but to reach an agreement quickly.

The White House, commenting on the talks, said they were a step forward, with the U.S. aiming for a mutually beneficial outcome. President Donald Trump, speaking from Air Force One, described the progress as “going OK,” while reiterating that real progress would only matter once a deal is reached. Oman, having played the role of mediator, facilitated the indirect communication between the two parties, with separate rooms used for discussions.

The two sides, however, remain far apart on key issues, and while progress is hoped for, the path to a final deal remains uncertain. Despite ongoing challenges, the talks provided a glimpse of potential cooperation, though the high stakes of failure continue to loom over the region.
