Sánchez stresses Spain’s positive foreign policy in China, advocating for balanced relations

Spain's foreign policy is aimed at fostering positive relationships, rather than opposing any nation, stated Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during his visit to China, marking the conclusion of his tour through Asia. In his address from the Spanish Embassy in Beijing, Sánchez emphasized Spain's commitment to strengthening its relations with China, alongside maintaining a strong connection between Europe and the United States.

Sánchez highlighted Spain's stance on promoting multilateralism and international dialogue, which is reflected in its approach to commercial relations. He also mentioned the trade imbalance between Spain, Europe, and China, emphasizing the importance of addressing this gap to avoid allowing trade tensions to hinder future growth opportunities.

The Spanish leader pointed out that his visit aligns with the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the EU and China and the 20th anniversary of strategic ties between Spain and China. He described his visit as a "coherent" step in strengthening positive agendas while continuing to build constructive relationships globally.

Sánchez reiterated that Spain’s position is one of constructive engagement, seeking negotiation and dialogue as solutions to trade crises. He underscored Europe’s openness to negotiating with the United States on equal terms to secure the best agreements for all parties, despite the ongoing challenges of tariffs, such as those on aluminum and vehicles.

The Spanish prime minister also called for better communication between China and the United States to resolve their trade disputes, a point he personally raised with Chinese President Xi Jinping. He believes that such discussions are vital for global stability, as trade wars have no winners.

During his visit, Sánchez signed multiple agreements aimed at deepening Spain's ties with China, including plans for future collaboration in science, education, and film production. These agreements are part of Spain’s broader strategy to balance the trade relationship with China, ensuring it is based on equity, reciprocity, and transparency.

Spain’s commitment to a more balanced economic relationship with China is exemplified by recent agreements in the health, agricultural, and livestock sectors. Sánchez also emphasized Spain’s support for expanding global cooperation to address international challenges, reinforcing China’s essential role in solving global issues.
