Pope Francis passes away at 88, marking a significant chapter in the Vatican's history
Pope Francis has died, as confirmed by the Vatican in a video announcement. The pontiff, who was elected in 2013 following the resignation of Benedict XVI, was 88 years old.
Despite his diminishing health, Pope Francis made a final public appearance at St. Peter's Square to celebrate Easter. His passing was announced on April 21, 2025.
"Dear brothers and sisters, it is with deep sadness that I must announce the death of our Holy Father Francis," Cardinal Kevin Farrell stated on Vatican television. "At 7:35 this morning, the Bishop of Rome, Francis, returned to the house of the Father."
