Romania holds presidential rerun amid controversy and rising far right

Romania reopened its polls on Sunday for a critical presidential election rerun following the annulment of the previous vote. The former winner, known for his anti-NATO stance, was disqualified due to alleged Russian interference and the influence of viral online campaigns. Now, far-right candidate George Simion is seen as the frontrunner among 11 contenders.

The first round vote is for a largely symbolic role with significant foreign policy weight. Simion, leader of a nationalist party, is attempting to capitalize on what he calls a stolen election last year. Promising to prioritize national interests, he hopes to secure over 50% of the vote to avoid a second round.

Simion’s online-focused campaign targets both domestic and diaspora voters. While distancing himself slightly from his disqualified predecessor, he shares strong criticism of EU institutions and opposes military support for Ukraine. A vocal supporter of Donald Trump, Simion aspires to bring a similar political wave to Romania.

Public frustration with mainstream political forces has grown amid economic struggles and high inflation. Many citizens hope for change through an alternative candidate.

Other key figures in the race include a pro-European coalition candidate promising stability, the reformist mayor of Bucharest, and a former prime minister running on a nationalist platform. Analysts say the contest is wide open, with undecided voters potentially reshaping the outcome.

Authorities have pledged to safeguard the integrity of this vote after widespread protests over the annulment of the previous election. International observers and local officials are monitoring closely to ensure transparency and fairness.
