South Korean President Faces Arrest Warrant Over Martial Law Controversy

A South Korean investigation team has requested a court to issue an arrest warrant for suspended President Yoon Suk Yeol. The charges against him include abuse of power and orchestrating rebellion following his brief declaration of martial law on December 3, which lasted only a few hours. The decree, which attempted to ban political activity and impose media censorship, has since sparked weeks of political unrest, disrupted democratic governance, and unsettled financial markets in South Korea.

The Corruption Investigation Office is spearheading the probe into President Yoon and other high-ranking officials, involving police and military authorities. Yoon has repeatedly avoided questioning and resisted office searches. Having been impeached, he is no longer shielded from prosecution if charges of rebellion or treason are filed.

The court has yet to decide on the arrest warrant, and it remains uncertain if Yoon can be compelled to cooperate with the investigation. Allegations also suggest he ordered defense officials to detain key political opponents and attempted to obstruct a parliamentary vote reversing the martial law.

Political fallout continues, as acting President Han Duck-soo was impeached for delaying appointments to the Constitutional Court, which is reviewing Yoon's case. Han’s successor, Choi Sang-mok, assumed the role amidst ongoing national challenges, including a devastating plane crash.

The crisis has led to arrests of other senior officials, including the former defense minister and top police officers, highlighting the extensive implications of Yoon’s controversial decree.
