Libya Declares Public Holiday for Amazigh New Year 2975
The High Council for the Amazigh of Libya has announced that Monday, January 13, 2025, will be observed as an official public holiday in all Amazigh-speaking regions of the country, marking the beginning of the Amazigh New Year 2975.
This decision aligns with earlier resolutions, including a 2012 decree by local authorities and the council’s Resolution No. 3 of 2013, which officially recognized the Amazigh New Year as a day off.
In its statement, the council extended warm wishes to all Libyans, expressing hopes that the new year would bring peace and prosperity.
Libya's Amazigh community endured years of marginalization under the former regime, where cultural and linguistic expressions were severely restricted. The fall of the regime in 2011, however, led to a resurgence of Amazigh identity, with increased recognition of their cultural contributions.
The declaration of the Amazigh New Year as a public holiday highlights Libya’s growing appreciation for its multicultural heritage and the importance of inclusivity in its national identity.
