Zelensky Ousts Ukraine Air Force Chief Following F-16 Crash

President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the commander of Ukraine's air force, Lt Gen Mykola Oleshchuk, amidst a contentious debate over the loss of a newly acquired F-16 fighter jet. The dismissal comes as Ukraine grapples with the aftermath of the crash, which occurred during a Russian missile barrage but was not directly caused by enemy fire.

Zelensky did not specify the reason for Oleshchuk's dismissal but emphasized his responsibility to "take care of all our warriors." The US-made F-16, one of several recently delivered by Western allies, crashed on Monday, resulting in the death of the pilot, Col Oleksiy Mes. Mes, known by his call sign "Moonfish," was one of Ukraine's most experienced pilots and had been trained abroad for F-16 missions.

The crash has sparked a heated debate within Ukraine, with politicians and military officials clashing over the cause of the incident. Ukrainian politician Mariana Bezuhla, a member of the parliamentary defense committee, claimed that the jet was downed by Ukraine's own Patriot air defense system. Oleshchuk responded by stating that an investigation was underway and accused Bezuhla of discrediting military leadership.

Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has led to significant territorial losses in the east. In response, Ukraine launched a surprise incursion into Russia's western Kursk region earlier this month, with reports of Ukrainian troops advancing deeper into Russian territory. Russia has intensified its attacks across Ukraine in retaliation, including a recent strike that killed a 14-year-old girl in Kharkiv and damaged a residential building.

Zelensky has renewed his calls for international partners to allow Ukraine to hit targets inside Russia to prevent such attacks. His office reported that Russian forces had fired more than 400 drones and missiles at Ukraine over the past week.

Lt Gen Anatolii Kryvonozhko has been appointed as the interim commander of Ukraine's air force. Kryvonozhko previously oversaw the central air command, leading operations in the center of the country. He takes charge amidst the ongoing debate over the F-16 crash and the broader conflict with Russia.

Zelensky's dismissal of Oleshchuk is not an isolated incident. Since the start of the full-scale invasion, he has sacked several military commanders, including the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, in February, and Lt Gen Yuriy Sodol in June, following public criticism of excessive casualties and accusations of incompetence.

The crash of the F-16 highlights the complexities and challenges Ukraine faces as it continues to defend against Russian aggression. With international support and advanced military equipment, Ukraine is navigating a delicate balance between bolstering its defenses and managing internal disputes. The dismissal of Oleshchuk underscores Zelensky's commitment to accountability and the ongoing struggle to protect Ukraine's sovereignty.
